A conference on the impact of the Troubles chaired by former President Mary McAleese is to be held in London this weekend.

The one-day event, sponsored by St Mary’s University in Twickenham, Hammersmith Irish Cultural Centre and a Westminster all-party parliamentary group, will examine the impact of the conflict on bereaved and traumatised families.

Dr McAleese will chair the conference at St Paul’s Church Centre, Hammersmith, on Saturday - the 44th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

Contributors will include Alan McBride, whose wife Sharon was killed in the 1993 Shankill bombing, and Eugene Reavey, who lost three brothers in a gun attack at their south Armagh home in 1976.

Guardian journalist Owen Boycott and Irish Times security analyst Dr Tom Clonan will also be among the contributors.

This event was conceived by St Mary’s MA Irish Studies student Michael O’Hare whose sister, Majella, was killed by the British army in 1976.
