A DERRY man accused of receiving weapons training in Syria damaged his electronic tag through the strain of praying five times a day, a court has heard.

Eamon Bradley (27), with an address at Benview Estate in the Coshquin area, has been charged with breaching his bail conditions by interfering with the tag.

A police officer said they were contacted by security firm G4S after it was thought Bradley's electronic tag had been tampered with.

The officer said Bradley had been on bail for almost a year and had not breached his conditions previously.

However, defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client would dispute that he interfered with the tag deliberately and that it was simply a case of wear and tear.

He said Bradley, who had converted to the Muslim faith, prayed five times a day and the "constant bending down has caused the tag to fray".

Deputy District Judge Neil Rafferty released Bradley on the same terms and conditions and he will appear on February 11 for a preliminary enquiry.

Among his bail conditions, he is not allowed to leave Northern Ireland or have internet access except for educational purposes.
