A SCHOOLBOY left fighting for his life after he was struck by a car near Belfast has made an "almost total return to how he was pre-accident".

Bangor FC Youth Academy said doctors have told Robbie Shaw (12) they believe he "will make a full recovery with no anticipated lasting effects".

The young boy from Belfast was left in a critical condition following the crash after he got off a bus on the Ballygowan Road, close to Roselawn Cemetery, on December 2.

The football community has rallied around him and his family and his club have posted regular updates on social media on his condition.

In one of its latest posts to show his battle to return from ill health, the club released a photograph of the talented footballer on his first trip out of his hospital ward.

With a broad smile, Robbie is pictured with his mum Lauryn leaving to visit the hospital cafe for a "hot chocolate and a bun".

In another post on Sunday, the club said Robbie's family have been told he is expected to "make a full recovery".

"An update from Lauryn yesterday following a conversation with the neuro-surgeon confirms that they are practically unconcerned about any lasting damage to Robbie's brain and there is no reason to believe anything other than he will make a full recovery with no anticipated lasting effects," they said.

"They went on to say that the only reason that he is still in hospital is due to his leg (which was the least of his worries way back when all this began).

"Robbie is now totally off all medication of any description as of two days ago and his body is completely looking after itself."
