Fury after Irish stars named 'British' at London film awards

ORGANISERS of the London film awards have been forced to amend film nomination categories that named Irish actors Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender as 'British' stars after an unprecidented backlash on social media.

The London Critics' Circle were forced to rename some of their nomination categories to reflect the fact that Irish actors, actresses and film makers are not 'British'.

When the nominations were revealed this morning Irish cinema fans were furious to see that Farrell, Fassbender and Ronan were listed under the categories British Actor of the year and British Actress of the Year respectively.

In response to the criticism the London Critics bowed to pressure and changed the names of the categories in response to criticism.

Co Carlow native Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for Leading Actress for her performance in 'Brooklyn' and 'Lost River' .

Kerryman Michael Fassbender is nominated for Leading Actor for his roles in 'Steve Jobs', 'Macbeth' and 'Slow West' while Colin Farrell, a Dubliner, is nominated for Leading Actor for his role in 'The Lobster' and 'Miss Julie'.

The movie is also in contention for Best Film and for Director of the Year.

Meanwhile 'Carol' is the hotly tipped movie of 2015 as far as the Critics Circle are concerned.

The film received nods for Best Film and Director of the year as well as nominations for Leading Actress for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
