A 65-year-old man is to be interviewed by police investigating reports that an otter was caught in a trap in Co Antrim.

Officers have searched a house in the Antrim area and removed several items for further examination after receiving a report that a dead otter had been seen in a trap on October 6.

Chief Inspector John Allen said: "A wildlife crime involves any action against any protected wild animal or plant which contravenes current wildlife or animal welfare legislation protecting Northern Ireland's wild animals and plants.

"Those who intentionally kill, injure or disturb protected wild animals need to be aware that you face the very real potential of being brought to justice."

Under EU laws, otters are a protected species.
