NORTHERN Ireland designer Jonathan Anderson has made fashion history by winning the top prize in both menswear and womenswear at the 2015 British Fashion Awards.

The 31-year-old, who created his JW Anderson label in 2008, beat big names like Victoria Beckham and Tom Ford to take the coveted awards at the London Coliseum.

It is the first time that a designer has won both the menswear and womenswear titles at the same time.

Anderson, who grew up in The Loup in Co Derry, is the son of former Ireland rugby international Willie Anderson, who was capped 27 times for the national side between 1984 and 1990.

Celebrating his double win, the young designer, who took the menswear title last year, said he felt it put both men and women’s fashion on an equal footing, adding: “I think men and women need each other in order to be able to make fashion.”

The 17 winners for 2015 were selected by a voting pool of 800 of their peers in the fashion industry.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie was presented with the Red Carpet Ambassador Award.
