Motorists found themselves diverted off the M1 yesterday due to a police checkpoint.

Drivers were briefly re-routed as part of a Northern Ireland-wide "major anti-crime operation" mounted to tackle "travelling criminals, organised crime and the terrorist threat".

While sections of the motorway are sometimes closed at night for maintenance work, it is unusual for police to divert traffic off the busy road.

Motorists travelling in both directions were directed off at Junction 12 at Portadown.

Some vehicles were then pulled over by officers at the end of the off-slip, but most traffic was allowed to drive through the roundabout and rejoin the M1.

A PSNI spokesman said the public may have noticed "an increased police presence on the streets and vehicle check points on major roads across the province".

Chief Inspector Ian Campbell added: "We understand that this operation may cause some inconvenience, particularly for motorists, however we are asking for their support and patience as we focus on tackling travelling criminals, organised crime and the terrorist threat.

"We hope that our increased activity and visibility will enable us to prevent and detect even more crime and reassure the public of our commitment to making Northern Ireland safer."
