Archbishop Eamon Martin last night became the latest recipient of the St Columb's College Alumnus Illustrissimus Award.

The honour is awarded to distinguished past pupils of the Derry school, with former winners including John Hume, Seamus Heaney, Martin O'Neill and the late Brian Friel.

Archbishop Martin was recognised at the college's past pupils' union dinner at the City Hotel.

The college, established in 1879 and was initially intended to be a diocesan seminary, is now a specialist school in mathematics and computing.

Archbishop Martin served as president of St Columb's College from 2000 until 2008.
