AN ambitious project to plant one million trees across the island of Ireland in just 24 hours has been launched.

The tree-planting frenzy is scheduled for February next year but applications for the free trees close on November 25th.

Organised by all-Ireland charity One Million Trees in One Day, farmers, schools and organisations across the north are being encouraged to apply for a pack offering between five and 500 saplings.

To date more than 400,000 trees have been planted at 1,000 sites across Ireland in pilot schemes carried out since 2013.

Project co-ordinator Imogen Rabone said Ireland is "sadly lacking when it comes to woodland and tree cover".

She said: "This project has big plans to facilitate the planting of much-needed trees and woodland in both rural and urban areas throughout Ireland.

"This is a unique opportunity for farmers and landowners to make their mark; to transform landscapes; and to leave a lasting legacy for future generations."

Although the trees are given out free on a first come basis, landowners applying are encouraged to make donations while businesses are also invited to donate and become sponsors for trees in their area.

The initiative has been developed in collaboration with the Irish Natural Forestry Foundation in the Republic, with support from the north's Woodland Trust.

Gregor Fulton from the Woodland Trust said: "Trees and woodland offer so much, from helping to improve water and air quality to providing shelter for crops and livestock."
