A cyclist killed in a road accident devoted himself to family and charity, mourners at his funeral were told.

Members of the city's Foyle Cycling Club paid a poignant and sombre tribute as the body of father-of-three, Adrian Mullan was carried into St Brigid's church yesterday.

Mr Mullan (42) was killed in an accident with a van while cycling with a club colleague last weekend. The Derry man died instantly in the accident on the main Redcastle to Gleneely road in Inishowen, Co Donegal.

As his body was carried into the church for Requiem Mass yesterday, Mr Mullan's former colleagues at the Foyle Cycling Club formed a guard of honour, dressed in club colours.

Fr Michael McGavigan told mourners Mr Mullan was known for his "kindness, charity and good humour" adding he had a dry sense of humour.

He said Mr Mullan suffered early tragedy when his brother died from cancer.

"He was inspired to make a difference and worked tirelessly to support the (Foyle) hospice. His skill and passion for cycling and the outdoors enabled him to see the beauty of God's creation from a different perspective while raising much needed money for charity," Fr McGavigan said.

He added that the sudden nature of his death made it all the more difficult to understand.
