RESIDENTS are being allowed to return to their homes on the Oldpark Road in north Belfast after a suspicious object sparked a security alert.

British Army bomb disposal experts examined a suspicious object and declared it an "elaborate hoax".

The Oldpark Road was closed at its junction with Cliftonville Road for a time.

De la Salle College in west Belfast was also evacuated during a security alert today.

The school on Edenmore Drive was cleared after it received a message on an answering machine.

Following a search of the area, the PSNI have said "nothing untoward" had been found.

The security alert has now ended and pupils and staff have been allowed to return to the school.
