A WOMAN has been released on police bail after being arrested in Derry on suspicion of withholding evidence as part of the investigation into the murder of Paul McCauley.

The 25-year-old woman was arrested this morning and released in the afternoon "on bail pending further police enquiries", police said.

Mr McCauley died in June, nine years after an attack left him with serious head injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey is leading the murder investigation and said there have now been eight arrests since Mr McCauley's death.

One man has been charged with murder, another will be reported to the PPS, five people have been released on police bail pending further enquiries and one man has been released unconditionally.

“Our enquiries into this murder are very much ongoing and I would like to thank those people who have so far come forward since Paul’s death to assist us. I would continue to ask anyone with any information to contact detectives at Maydown Police Station on the non emergency number 101 or use the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111,” DCI Harvey said.

Last month police carried out a leaflet drop in Derry's Fountain estate and Irish Street appealing for information on Mr McCauley's attack.

Mr McCauley had been attending a 2006 leaving party for a friend at a house in the Waterside when he was attacked. The civil servant and father of one was left with serious head injuries and required round-the-clock care for the remaining nice years of his life.

Mourners at his funeral were told his attackers had chosen evil over good.
