A SKY Sports commentator has been criticised for calling controversial Republic of Ireland international James McClean a "Northern Irishman from Londonderry".

McClean, who was booed repeatedly during his Premier League debut for West Bromwich Albion against Manchester City last night is known for his republican background.

He described himself on his Twitter account as an "Irish bhoy from Derry playing ball for West Brom & Ireland".

McClean famously refused to wear a Remembrance Day poppy out of respect for people killed on Bloody Sunday and most recently turned his back during the British National Anthem during a pre-season friendly.

And last month he sent a tweet out about Derry Council's vote to change officially change its name saying :"Training finished, gym finished, Derry's getting its rightful name back, have a great day folks."

Last night's description of McClean by English commentator Alan Parry enraged his supporters, who were quick to take to social media to express their feelings.

One tweeted that he "should be ashamed of himself for his provocative and childish comments".

Another branded it "needlessly provocative stuff" and someone else accused him of "stirring it unnecessarily".

Sky Sports was urged to "reprimand" Parry for the comment, which was described as "trolling".
