A PENSIONER who died after she was struck by car while out walking her dog in Ballymena has been named.

Yvonne Richmond (70) died after being struck by a vehicle on the Galgorm Road, close to the junction with Dans Road.

Her pet dog was also killed.

She was a mother of seven sons and had grandchildren. Friends of the Richmond family said some of her sons had been on holiday when the tragedy took place and were returning home with their families.

Mrs Richmond was a widow for about the past 30 years following the death of her late husband John.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident shortly before 9pm on Friday and the road was closed while investigations were carried out.

Mrs Richmond was knocked down close to two of the town's grammar schools.

Her death brings to 39 the number of people who have died on the north's roads this year.

Councillor Reuben Glover who knows the family said the death of Mrs Richmond had shocked the community in Ballymena.

"It is a desperate situation for the family whom I know and it is also very sad and tragic," he said.

TUV councillor Timothy Gaston said: "It is a very, very tragic loss, my thoughts are with the family.

"It is a very tragic way to lose a life."

North Antrim DUP MLA David McIlveen also expressed his sympathy to the family saying they were "in his prayers".

Police have appealed for information.
