A man appeared in court today accused of being drunk in charge of a motability scooter.

Malcolm McCormick is alleged to have committed the offence in Belfast city centre last month.

The 43-year-old, of Princetown Road in Bangor, Co Down, spoke only to confirm he understood the alleged offence.

He is charged with being unfit through drink or drugs when in charge of a mechanically propelled vehicle on June 4.

Defence solicitor Norman Shannon told Belfast Magistrates' Court: "This was a motability scooter."

District Judge Peter King was told McCormick is alleged to have been driving in the area of St Anne's Cathedral.

He agreed to adjourn the case to allow further clarification on the charge against the accused.

McCormick was told to return to court on July 15.
