Seven more people have died in the north after contracting coronavirus, the Department of Health has confirmed.

The total death toll for people who tested positive has now risen to 501.

Three people died since yesterday while a further four fatalities occurred earlier but are only now being reported.

The figures mainly refer to fatalities in hospital.

There were 1,084 Covid-19 tests carried out with 42 individuals testing positive.

In the north's intensive care units, there are 13 patients with suspected or confirmed Covid-19, down from 18 the previous day.

There are coronavirus clusters in 141 care homes, up from 139 yesterday. A cluster is where two or more residents or staff have symptoms of coronavirus.

Today Health Minister Robin Swann rejected criticism that as the pandemic started to take hold, patients being discharged from hospitals were not being swabbed for coronavirus prior to being admitted to care homes.

The minister said his officials had been "working behind the scenes" throughout the period in terms of staff redeployment and testing.
