A PAYROLL glitch has led to 1,500 workers at Northern Ireland’s biggest health trust not receiving their full wages.

The Belfast Health and Social Trust has attributed the issue to a software problem.

Nurses are among the worst hit, with some being underpaid by as much as £300 in their October pay packets.

The blunder is the latest in a series of mistakes since a new payment system was first introduced two years ago.

While staff affected received their basic pay, they did not receive extra wages for unsocial hours worked.

Last year a trade union threatened industrial action after thousands of staff were underpaid for five months, with some nurses receiving bad credit histories as they missed bill payments.

SDLP councillor Nichola Mallon said the system needed to be probed.

"Between October 2013 when it was first introduced, and May 2014, in the Belfast Trust alone they had to make 3,002 additional corrections to pay," she said.

"People have had wrong National Insurance contributions deducted, many of them were awarded tax rebates that were subsequently taken back off them.

"You fast forward two years and here we are again.

"The staff who are affected are those working the most unsociable and stressful hours on the front line, being underpaid, now they are having to chase up to get what is entitled to them."

A spokesman for the Belfast Trust said they would receive their outstanding pay on Tuesday.

"The trust will engage with the system providers to investigate what has happened to ensure there is no repeat in the November payroll.

"We would encourage staff to contact their line management if they have any concerns," he added.
