A CHINESE woman has said her family may leave their Coleraine home after her husband was kicked and punched in a racist attack on their doorstep.

Mother-of-one Luo Ruoyin said she had been left feeling frightened following the assault by four men and a woman on 45-year-old Wu Youzhong, also known as John Wu, at their home in the Long Commons area.

Dr Wu, a doctor at a Chinese medical clinic at the Diamond shopping centre in the Co Derry town, remained in the Causeway Hospital last night being treated for facial injuries and concussion.

He was set upon after going to investigate a noise at the front door of the family home at around 9pm on Tuesday.

Ms Luo, who was in the kitchen, said someone had smashed the glass of the front door.

"My husband just went out and said to them: 'Why did you do that?' and the next thing I heard he was just screaming in pain and I was scared," she said.

"He was just holding his head and covering his eyes and blood was just running down everywhere.

"I just kept screaming and screaming."

Ms Luo said her husband had a "wound on his face" and swollen eyes and would be kept in hospital for several days, with a specialist eye doctor due to be consulted today.

She said she did not know whether the attack was racially motivated but said she and her husband and their two-year-old daughter might now leave their home.

"I don't know. Probably I think we will leave this house," she said.

Police last night appealed for information about the attack, which they said had a racist motive.

A spokesman said the victim had been "attacked by four unknown males and a female who punched and kicked him". ■ BEATEN UP: Wu Youzhong, a doctor at a Chinese medical clinic, was beaten up in his Coleraine home on Tuesday evening
