ASHFIELD Girls' High School in east Belfast has created a virtual induction experience for parents and pupils.

In normal circumstances, the school would be preparing to open its doors later this month to welcome the pupils for a tour, to meet their teachers and learn more about the opportunities and support available.

Instead, teachers have created a series of video clips and virtual tours, available via the school's website.

"This is not the induction process we had in mind for our new Year 8 students and their parents. That usually involves an afternoon visiting the school, accompanied by a ‘sausage sizzle’ with upwards of 300 visitors," said principal Louise Hanvey.

"However, we are acutely aware that the transition to post-primary school can be a nervous time for both students and their parents and we wanted to alleviate these pressures and reassure everyone there is nothing to worry about.

"My staff, whilst teaching remotely from home, and working in school to support the children of key workers, have come together, virtually, to create these fantastic videos which, I'm sure, will be appreciated by all."

Via the school's website and a series of easy to navigate links, parents can watch the short video clips where they are introduced to key members of staff who guide them through the induction process.

Pupils also have access to information on what their new school day will involve with personal messages from the principal, head of progress and other staff including the nurse, literacy coordinator and lunchtime supervisor.
