STUNT performer Lemuel Black is to teach a class of film students about his work as part of a programme that introduces young people to screen careers.

Lem will be conducting a three-day stunt co-ordination workshop for those aged 16-19.

It is being offered by ScreenWorks, delivered by Into Film and funded by NI Screen.

His practical masterclass will cover topics including how to become a stunt performer; self-risk assessing, set etiquette, fight techniques and reactions, fight choreography and basic wire work.

"I have been lucky to do all sorts of stunts including falling off horses and motorbikes but if you have a fantastic co-ordinator, stunts are the safest things on set because they are rehearsed and planned very rigorously. As much as possible, the element of danger is taken out," he said.

He is one of only two fully qualified stunt performers in Northern Ireland and has worked on projects including Nightflyers, the historical drama Vikings and Into the Badlands.

"We have only had a film industry over the last 10 years or so and it takes that length of time for a performer to learn all the skills required. I want to show young people who want to do this that there is an avenue to go down to learn new skills and get on the British or Irish stunt registers," he said.

"In this workshop, I will show them what is expected of them, offer them some experience. They will have to go out of Northern Ireland to pick up some of the skills and get the necessary qualifications but if they are determined and dedicated, it is a great career."
