A rural Catholic post-primary school is seeking to join the integrated sector.

School chiefs last year withdrew a second proposal to shut St Mary's High in Brollagh Co Fermanagh.

It had originally been proposed that it close in 2015 due to low pupil numbers.

Accessibility is a major issue for children. If St Mary's shut, children would have to travel into Enniskillen even though the school is less than two miles from Donegal.

Previous attempts at finding a cross-border solution failed.

Now, the Education Authority (EA) has shared a proposal which would allow the small school to become integrated.

It is hoped that switching sectors would boost enrolments.

Expressions of interest were sought from primary schools and 51 responses from parents indicated they would enrol their child if the school became integrated.

"A transformed school would provide the opportunity for young people from different faith backgrounds, with the common bond of living in a rural area, to be educated together," a case for change document said.

"St Mary’s HS, which is currently a Catholic maintained school, already has a small number of non-Catholic faith pupils attending the school and transformation would enable the school to become the post-primary school provision for all young people in this rural area.

"This would have a positive impact on community cohesion in the area."
