Principals and VPs to take industrial action

Head teachers are to take action over workload, the inspection process, consultation and support for schools

SCHOOL principals and VPs are to take industrial action short of a strike.

Members of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) in Northern Ireland will begin action on October 21.

In a ballot, 95 per cent backed action short of strike while 58 per cent said they were prepared to walk out.

The dispute relates to workload, the inspection process, consultation and support for schools.

NAHT (NI) President Geri Cameron said members would stop undertaking tasks they believe "have no appreciable bearing on high quality teaching and learning".

"It is important that school communities understand the focus of our action is on the employers and not learners," she said.

"The well-being of school leaders is critical. Our door is open to discussion with the aim of a resolution."
