A Derry school has said it is determined to continue with Irish-medium education despite an application for a special unit being turned down by Peter Weir.

The education minister informed St Brigid’s College, Carnhill yesterday that he had rejected its development proposal for an Irish unit to be established from September next year.

He said he was "concerned at the detrimental impact such a proposal would have on existing Irish-medium provision at Gaelcholáiste Dhoire (in Dungiven) which would threaten the long term sustainability of the school”.

The minister said it was important that effective area planning for Irish medium education be brought forward in a co-ordinated and strategic manner.

A spokesman for St Brigid's confirmed it had received Mr Weir’s decision, saying: “The school is determined, however, to continue with its provision for Irish medium education. We are planning to welcome another cohort of Year 8 pupils to our Irish medium education stream in September 2017.”
