Job and training opportunities created by the Ulster University's Greater Belfast Development project are to be showcased at a special event next year.

The development project will see the vast majority of activities based at UU's Jordanstown campus relocate to a significantly expanded Belfast campus by 2018.

An event, to be held at the art college campus on Wednesday 20 January 2016 from 10am to 4pm, will allow people to apply for a range employment of opportunities, hear about other upcoming opportunities and how to apply for them.

The employment and skills event showcases the jobs which have been and will be created as a result of the social clause requirements included in the contract for the final major construction element associated with the relocation project.

Employment and learning minister Stephen Farry said the potential for job creation during the construction phase of the new UU campus was considerable.

"I am delighted that my department, in partnership with the university, has been leading the way in terms of social clause commitments resulting in the creation of 20 jobs for the unemployed during the life of this project," he said.

"Under the social clause requirements the contractors Lagan Somague, will also be required to ensure that they provide four students with 40 weeks work experience each and maintain apprenticeships at a level of 5 per cent in its workforce for the duration of the contract.

"At this event, a range of support organisations, for example my department's Careers Service and Employment Service, will be present to provide individuals with information, advice and guidance on a range of training and employment schemes. These can assist individuals progress towards work and better employment prospects, equipping them with the skills to compete in the labour market and meet the needs of employers both now and in the future."

More than £250 million will be invested in the development, representing one of the largest development projects that the city has witnessed in recent years.

The refreshed campus has the potential to generate many times this initial investment through the economic and regenerative boost that the 6,000 daily users of the site will bring to the area and for Belfast as a whole.
