ALMOST 150 staff are to leave Queen's University Belfast - a large proportion of them academics.

Details of a voluntary severance and early retirement scheme were presented to the university's governing senate body today.

A total of 370 staff applied to leave their post through the scheme, the university has confirmed. The total approved was 155 although 13 decided not to accept the offer.

Of the 142 to go, 57 are academic staff while 36 others are academic-related. A total of 23 technical and 26 clerical staff/library assistants will leave.

A Queen's spokesman said the university was "required to save recurrently £15.9m".

"The voluntary severance/voluntary early retirement scheme was one of the enablers to support the delivery of this target," he said.

"As of (Tuesday's) meeting of senate, total savings identified are £15.6m, of which £13m relates to pay."
