Fresh from last week's European Council summit, where it was agreed that the Brexit negotiations could move to their next phase in the new year, Mrs May urged readers to submit their questions.

"I recognise people from all communities in Northern Ireland want to know what the UK's exit from the European Union means for them," she told The Irish News.

"The views of the people of Northern Ireland are hugely important to me, and to the whole of the UK, and that's why I want to respond to your questions."

Last year's referendum on EU membership saw 56 per cent of people in Northern Ireland vote to remain.

In the 15 months since, there has been widespread confusion and uncertainty about the future, particularly in communities close to the border.

The breakthrough deal announced earlier this month by Mrs May and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker pledged that there will be no hard border and that the Good Friday Agreement would be upheld. However, how these broad principles will translate into reality has yet to be agreed.

Noel Doran, editor of The Irish News, said: "Brexit is an issue of paramount concern to people on both sides of the Irish border, and as a newspaper we have directly questioned almost every aspect of the British government's performance since the EU referendum.

"As so many key issues need to be clarified, we very much welcome the decision by Theresa May to directly respond to queries from our readers."

Mr Doran said Mrs May's initiative would make a "hugely significant contribution to the wider debate" on Brexit and the border.

The responses to questions alongside expert commentary and analysis will appear in The Irish News later this week.

The contributors of the six questions selected will each receive a Brexit cartoon signed by Ian Knox.
