A SPECIAL sitting of Belfast City Council will tonight discuss the European Commission's decision to rule out the prospect of becoming European Capital of Culture.

A joint pitch by Belfast and Derry was among five UK bids left disappointed last month after the selection process was discontinued due to Brexit.

The capital of culture title is rotated around European countries and it was set to be the UK's turn in 2023.

Sinn Féin councillor Jim McVeigh said that his party convened the meeting to call on the council "to lead a cross-party and business and civic delegation to Brussels to lobby for this decision to be reversed".

"The north of Ireland is clearly a special case given the majority of citizens here voted to remain in the EU and wish to be treated as European citizens," he said.

Belfast and Derry have so far spent £350,000 on their bid out of a total budget of £800,000.
