TWITTER users have been quick to call out a Brexit-supporting MEP after he described the News Letter as "Northern Ireland's main paper".

UKIP politician Jonathan Arnott had tweeted his delight that the Belfast-based daily had backed the 'Leave' campaign.

He wrote: "Northern Ireland's main paper backs Brexit. Yet Remain still scaremonger on mainland about NI in event of Leave vote."

But Twitter users were quick to correct Mr Arnott, with The Irish News in fact having the biggest market share of the north's three main daily papers.

One asked: "Are you going to retract this as it's factually incorrect?", while another said: "No harm to the NL (News Letter), but it's third behind the Belfast Telegraph and the Irish News."

Broadcaster William Crawley also commented: "The News Letter's circulation is about 20K. It's not even close to NI's 'main newspaper'."
