Arlene Foster has written to social media companies about what she termed a “misinformation campaign” by Sinn Féin.

The DUP leader’s complaint relates to a video posted earlier this week on Twitter and Facebook about plans to update the electoral register.

Sinn Féin deputy leader Michelle O’Neill claimed the forthcoming Electoral Office canvass, which is a legal requirement, “could lead to tens of thousands of people losing their vote”.

The party’s video claimed: “The British government is planning a mass purge of voters in the north.

“This is a blatant attempt to suppress the voice of citizens in next year’s historic assembly election.”

Mrs Foster said if social media platforms hosted the video they were “complicit in creating and spreading false statements designed to cause confusion and misunderstanding”.
