Co Derry school gets green light for extension plan
PLANNING approval has been granted to extend Loreto College in Coleraine to accommodate hundreds of extra students following the closure of a nearby Catholic school.
Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council's planning committee yesterday green-lighted a proposal to build six new classrooms and more carparking spaces at Castlerock road site.
Loreto College lodged a planning application a year ago in direct response to the phased closure of St Joseph's College in the town.
Pupil numbers are expected to rise from 800 to 1080 over the next academic year.
A series of closures and mergers which radically altered the Catholic schools map was first announced by former Sinn Féin education minister John O'Dowd five years.
