Police have revealed that the mother of a 25-year-old man who was shot in a paramilitary-style shooting in Derry last night heard her son's "cries of pain and ran to his aid".

The victim was shot a number of times in the Lisfannon Park area of the city at around 7.15pm.

He sustained gunshot wounds to both legs and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A police spokesman described what had happened as a "sickening and vicious attack".

"He was targeted in a residential area during the early evening when children and families were going about their normal everyday lives. This is despicable and should not happen in a civilised society," he said.

"What makes this incident all the more shocking is that the victim's own mother heard his cries of pain and ran to his aid.

“I am appealing to the people of this community to help us identify the perpetrators of this callous attack".
