SINN Féin deputy leader Michelle O'Neill was among mourners at the funeral of Belfast republican Annie Cahill yesterday.

Mrs Cahill, who was in her 80s and the wife of former IRA leader Joe Cahill, passed away earlier this week.

Hundreds of people followed her tricolour-draped coffin as it travelled along the Falls Road to St John's Church for Requiem Mass.

Ms O'Neill, West Belfast MP Paul Maskey and North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín helped carry Mrs Cahill's coffin during the funeral procession.

Ms Cahill was a founding member of the National Graves Association and members of the organisation provided a guard of honour at the funeral.

She was buried alongside her husband at Milltown Cemetery.

Mr Maskey last night paid tribute to Mrs Cahill.

“Annie was a great woman and a great republican and obviously her death is a sad time for the entire family circle and my thoughts are with them all,” he said.
