DANIEL O’Donnell has been forced to issue a statement warning his fans about an impersonator who has been attempting to dupe them into parting with their cash.

The Donegal crooner warned fans not to be taken in by the "rogue Daniel" who has been using Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp to contact his supporters.

From Kincasslagh in west Donegal, the hugely popular entertainer has won a new generation of fans following his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015.

It is understood the 'fake' Daniel has been contacting fans and asking them to donate money to charities.

In a statement issued through his online fanzine, the singer 56 year-old warned fans about the scam saying there was someone on WhatsApp using his name and image while seeking online donations for a charitable cause.

The singer said: “Please be aware that this is not Daniel, as Daniel never messages his fans on WhatsApp, and as this person is using Daniel’s image to try and get money from unsuspecting followers, this is regarded as fraud.

“Anyone who gets a message from this ‘rogue Daniel” needs to report it immediately through WhatsApp – as there is an option to do so – to block this person.

“Please also be aware that Daniel never goes on messenger via Facebook, so if you see anything up there which looks like it has come or is coming from Daniel, it’s not.”

The latest attempt is the second time the popular singer has had to warn fans about scammers. Last year, he issued a warning on Facebook that a bogus account had been set up in his name.
