THE first series of TV show Derry Girls is to be made available in the United States after it was bought by Netflix US.

The show, which tells the story of a group of school friends growing up in Derry during the 1990s, reached an audience of 2.5 million when it was broadcast earlier this year

The comedy show broke all Channel Four records for a new series when it was broadcast and the channel quickly commissioned a second series.

Created and written by Penned Lisa McGee, Derry Girls Derry Girls reached 54 per cent of the Northern Ireland TV audience, including 65 per cent of 16-34 year olds.

News of the purchase by Netflix US comes as filming is underway for series two of the popular show.

In recent weeks, several well-known Derry locations have been used to film scenes including Free Derry Wall, which was decked out in Christmas decorations.

In addition, the Bogside Stores changed its name to Denis’s Wee Shop after the new identity it was given in the first series.

While little has been given away about the content of series two, MsGee has indicated she would like to see how her heroes would cope with the Christmas visit to the city by then US president Bill Clinton in 1995.
