STORMONT politicians may still be at loggerheads, but two councillors from different political parties have managed to seal a deal to last a lifetime – by getting married.

Alliance councillor Sian O'Neill and Sinn Féin councillor Kieran Mulholland received warm congratulations from across the political spectrum after the couple tied the knot at the weekend.

Ms O'Neill is a representative on Belfast City Council, while Mr Mulholland sits on Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

The couple, who announced their engagement on St Patrick's Day, married in a church ceremony on Saturday and their reception was held in the Tullyglass hotel in Ballymena.

Among councillors to send congratulations was Kate Nicholl in Belfast. The Alliance councillor tweeted a wedding selfie of the bride celebrating with other party members – prompting many messages of congratulations.

Sinn Féin councillor Patrice Hardy said on Twitter: "Wedding bells today for Sinn Féin's Kieran Mulholland and Alliance's Sian O'Neill! Political outreach at its best!"

Ms O'Neill was co-opted onto Belfast City Council in 2015 after previously working as a constituency caseworker for Alliance leader Naomi Long, while Mr Mulholland was elected to Causeway Coast and Glens in 2014.

The couple have been together for several years and have a baby son.

It's not the first time politicians involved in different parties have found love together.

Former taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny met his wife Fionnuala O'Kelly at Leinster House in Dublin where she worked as a press officer for Fianna Fáil.

In July last year it emerged that Kezia Dugdale, then Scottish Labour leader, was in a relationship with Jenny Gilruth, an SNP member of the Scottish Parliament.
