A MAN who was shot up to six times in a paramilitary-style attack in Derry was beaten with iron bars after the shooting in what police have described as a "vicious and barbaric" assault.

The man was attacked shortly after 9pm in the Rinmore Drive area of Creggan on Friday.

Police last night said his injuries “are potentially life changing”.

Missiles were later thrown at PSNI officers attending the scene.

It is believed the victim was attacked as he sat at home with his brother after a gang burst into their home through a back door.

The man was shot several times in the legs, arms and hand before being beaten.

Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell, who was attending a community event nearby, condemned the attack.

“He was brutally attacked,” he said.

“These people need to step forward and tell the community.

“It’s not an attack on an individual, it’s an attack on the community.”

Detective Chief Inspector McCubbin said police were treating the incident “as a paramilitary style attack”.

“This vicious and barbaric incident has left a man with potentially life changing injuries and the recklessness shown by those involved in carrying out this attack in a build-up residential area should be condemned,” he said.

“There can be no justification for this type of attack and needs to stop.

“The local community should be outraged this shooting incident took place in their area.”
