THE republican plot at Milltown Cemetery in west Belfast is to undergo restoration and maintenance work, the National Graves Association has said.

The organisation said work on the main plot would begin on November 10.

It is expected to take three to four weeks to complete.

Opened in 1972, the association said the plot "is now in need of some major repairs".

"This work is essential to allow us as an association to keep the high standard in which we maintain all Irish republican graves under our care," it added.

There are 77 republicans buried in the newer part of the plot, including hunger striker Bobby Sands and three IRA members killed in Gibraltar in 1988.
