AN ULSTER Unionist councillor expressed surprise after his Twitter account was hacked and began sharing pornographic material.

Chris McGimpsey's Twitter account was changed to the name 'Adriana' and the profile image replaced with a picture a woman in her underwear.

The Belfast councillor's hacked account, which it appears was compromised almost a fortnight ago, also shared a link to pornography websites alongside an image of a woman wearing a mask.

When contacted yesterday, Mr McGimpsey said he was unaware of the issue because he does not use Twitter.

"This is appalling. I don't even know how to stop a Twitter account," said the councillor, who had the online profile set up some years ago.

Mr McGimpsey said he "wouldn't even know" how to use Twitter, saying: "I will have to go into city council – they will know and just get it closed."

The 66-year-old added: "If it's pornography, I wouldn't even have an interest in seeing it."

Mr McGimpsey later said he alerted Belfast City Council staff to the issue and they helped him to regain control of his Twitter profile.

He tweeted his thanks to The Irish News for informing him of the online security breach.

It comes after UUP MLA and former party leader Mike Nesbitt earlier this month warned that his Facebook account had been hacked.

"Please do not accept a Facebook friend request from me. My page has been hacked and cloned," he tweeted.
