POLICE conducted almost 200 vehicle check points in an operation focussing on rural crime, cold callers and scams.

The PSNI operation was carried out in partnership with colleagues from An Garda Siochana, HMRC and Trading Standards.

Officers conducted 189 vehicle check points, seized nine vehicles and made two arrests during the targeted operation on Thursday.

The operation involved targeted checkpoints and proactive patrols in known cold caller areas.

"While it should be noted that not all cold callers are rogue traders, it is our intention that this, and future operations, will help put a stop to those unofficial traders who overcharge for poor quality work or work that is never completed at all," said PSNI Chief Superintendent Simon Walls.

"This was also about raising awareness around the various scams used by fraudsters to take money from unsuspecting members of the public."
