THEY are used to battling one another in a courtroom.

But today a group of rival barristers will come together for a trek up Slieve Donard to raise awareness for mental health issues.

The 24 legal professionals will compete against one another to see who can reach the 850m summit first.

Divided into six teams each representing a separate division of the High Court - Commercial Bar, Criminal Bar, Family Bar, Personal Injuries Bar, Young Bar and Chancery Bar - they will be supporting the mental health charity, Aware.

Receiving support from Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan, an added dimension of the trek will see the barristers compete against one another to claim the Tim Ferriss Cup, in memory of their late colleague.

Adele O'Grady, chairperson of the Bar Library charity committee, said they had given their challenge a Game of Thrones theme and re-named it, 'Winter is Coming: Battle of the Barristers'.

"The Bar's charity of the year is Aware, a local mental health charity providing support and education on mental health issues, which is a cause which is seriously under-funded in Northern Ireland,"

"But we are also participating in memory of Tim Ferriss QC, a former colleague of ours who sadly passed away from bowel cancer a number of years ago.

"Tim was highly regarded, a very quiet man, but a tremendous supporter of charitable causes throughout his esteemed career.

"It is the first time this cup has been available in memory of Tim and the competition is fierce as you might imagine as it's the team that raises the most money for Aware that lifts the cup. It's for an incredibly worthy cause."
