POLICE have appealed for witnesses following the death of a motorcyclist in a road crash in Co Down.

The 45-year-old man is understood to have died at the scene of the collision near Newtownards on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the Portaferry Road at around 2.45pm following the crash involving an orange and black motorcycle and a white private hire coach.

The name of the man had not yet been released by police.

PSNI Sergeant Jonny Mackenzie said the crash happened close to Finlay's Road.

"I would appeal to anyone who was travelling along this road and may have witnessed this collision or have dashcam footage that would assist in our enquiries to contact police in Newtownards," he said.

DUP assembly member Peter Weir said it was "tragic news" that the motorcyclist had "lost his life".

"There is a family grieving tonight who must be uppermost in our thoughts," he wrote on Twitter.

"I echo the PSNI appeal if you witnessed the accident to come forward to them."
