Two takeaways in Northern Ireland have made the UK shortlist of the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year awards

TWO takeaways in Northern Ireland have made the UK shortlist in the National Fish and Chip Awards.

The Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon and Silverfin Traditional Fish and Chips in Newry are in the top 20 for the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award.

The awards, organised by Seafish, recognises true excellence in the fish and chip industry.

The shops will now compete in two further rounds of judging in their quest to become the UK's number one fish and chip shop.

As part of the judging process, each shop is assessed on a variety of elements including, sustainable sourcing policies, menu development and innovation and of course the quality of fish and chips.

Over the coming weeks the shops will undergo a further phase of mystery diner judging inspections in order to whittle the UK top 20 down to a shortlist of 10 before the final stage of judging held in London in January.

The winner will be announced at the National Fish and Chip Awards in London on January 24.
