One man charged with in connection with Portadown sectarian assault

A 37-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray following an incident in Portadown where two men were dragged from a car by a gang and assaulted.

The men were targeted after their car stopped at lights in Bridge Street area of the Co Armagh town on Sunday.

One man, who was a passenger in the car, was badly beaten and required hospital treatment for extensive but not life threatening injuries.

It is is thought his attackers identified him as Catholic from the sports top he was wearing.

The driver of the car was also attacked and treated for his injuries.

A woman and a two month old baby were in the back seat but were unharmed.

The assault was linked to raised tensions in the area around a loyalist bonfire in the Edenderry of the town, which was set on fire on Monday to commemorate Somme Day on July 1.

The front windscreen of the Renault Clio the victims were travelling in was smashed with up to eight men thought to be involved in the attack.

Police arrested a 15-year-old boy nearby on suspicion of crimes including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

He was released on bail, pending further enquiries.

A 37-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault and affray.

A 28-year-old man has also been charged with affray, assault and criminal damage and released on bail.
