A MOTORCYCLIST in his fifties died yesterday evening following a crash in Donegal.

The accident involving the man's bike and a car happened shortly before 5.30pm at Castleforward on the main Burnfoot to Buncrana Road.

The man was taken to Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry but was pronounced dead there a short time later.

The driver of the car was not injured.

Gardaí say the coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination is to be carried out.

Motorists travelling to the Irish Open in Ballyliffin were advised to take diversions as the road remained closed last night.

Meanwhile a second crash involving a single vehicle in Co Down left a woman fighting for her life in the Ulster hospital in Dundonald last night.

The accident involving a blue Toyota Yaris happened on the Killyleagh Road, Killinchy at around 12.30am on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the South Eastern trust last night said the victim was in a "serious condition".
