THE daughter of assassinated US politician Robert F Kennedy will attend an annual summer school later this year named after the family.

Human rights activist Kerry Kennedy will open the 5th annual Kennedy Summer School 50 years after her father was shot dead in June 1968.

Her uncle, former US president John F Kennedy, was also assassinated in November 1963.

The event, which will take place in New Ross, Co Wexford, will feature figures from the world of politics on both sides of the Atlantic.

Journalists, academics and other speakers will also attend the event which runs from September 6 to 8.

More than 40 guest speakers will participate in debates on a range of subjects including US politics, Brexit and the recent Referendum to Repeal the Eighth Amendment.

The summer school will also feature a showing of Maurice Fitzpatrick’s documentary In the Name of Peace; John Hume in America which will be followed by a panel discussion on his political contribution with academic Dr Alison Meagher, former taoiseach Brian Cowen and John Hume Jnr.

Broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan, who helped launch the 2018 programme, said: “The line-up of guest speakers is incredibly impressive; not only am I looking forward to taking part, I’m also looking forward to listening to what is sure to be lively discussion and debate on a broad range of present-day political issues.''
