A SUBSTANTIAL quantity of drugs was found at the home of a Co Derry man whose sudden death prompted police to issue a warning about illegal substances.

It is understood the stash, believed to include Class A drugs, was discovered in the Moneymore home of Mark Hay (34) last month.

Several other people received medical attention after the “consumption of drugs” at the property at Northland Road on May 27.

Originally from Cookstown in Co Tyrone, Mr Hay was known to police.

In the days after his death police said they had seized a “significant quantity” of suspected cocaine during searches at addresses in the Mid Ulster area.

Details of the find come after it emerged that police are investigating a possible drugs link to the deaths of two men in Co Tyrone last weekend.

Liam Campbell (36) died in the Coolnafranky Park area of Cookstown on Saturday while Gary McCabe (30) died at a property in the Donaghmore Road area of Dungannon the following day.

Both men, who were originally from the Lurgan area, are believed to have known each other.

The deaths of the three men, just weeks apart and within the same Mid Ulster Council area, has raised concerns.

SDLP assembly member Patsy McGlone met with police earlier this week along with councillors Christine Flynn and Martin Kearney.

“We pressed police hard to tackle levels of crime, anti-social behaviour and for other convictions around drug supply in the constituency and they gave us an assurance they would be taking further action in the not too distant future,” he said.

Mr McGlone said the meeting with police was held in “response to a lot of widespread concern in the community”.

Superintendent Mike Baird said he was pleased to meet the delegation.

“It was a very positive meeting at which we spoke at length about a number of topics including anti-social behaviour and drugs,” he said.

“I reiterated my, and my officers’, continued determination to address the issues which affect people in the area and to keep people safe.”
