Sinn Féin TD admits `attitude to gardai not what it should have been' after drunken confrontation

A SINN Féin TD said his attitude to gardaí "was not what it should have been", after pleading guilty to being drunk and abusive to officers during a family celebrations.

Pat Buckley from Midleton, who was elected to Cork East in 2016, apologised for his behaviour.

He entered his guilty plea at the district court in the town on Thursday to two charges under the Public Order Act.

Gardaí were called in August after a complaint about noise from a party at Mr Buckley's home.

An inspector told the court that when they arrived at to the TD’s home they were told to "f*** off" and called him an a***hole.

The case has been adjourned until November 8 to pass sentence.

Mr Buckley, who is understood to have been celebrating the graduation of one his children from school, apologised for any offence caused.

"This was a family event, a celebratory affair involving a few drinks in my own home," he said.

"Unfortunately, with alcohol on board, my attitude towards the gardaí, when they arrived at my home, was not what it should have been.

"I apologise profusely for any offence caused and I accept totally the punishment handed down to me in court yesterday."

In 2014, he was disqualified for three years after being convicted of being over the permitted alcohol limit while driving.
