A PHOTOGRAPHER from Northern Ireland has won a Pulitzer Prize for his images of the mass exodus of the Rohingya people to Bangladesh.

Former Irish News photographer Cathal McNaughton, from Co Antrim, won the highly respected prize for his work with Reuters.

The Cushendall man, who is the news agency's chief photographer in India, was one of a number of entrants recognized in the category of Feature Photography.

The Pulitzer judges honoured the team "for shocking photographs that exposed the world to the violence Rohingya refugees faced in fleeing Myanmar".

It was one of two 2018 Pulitzer Prizes Reuters won.

The other saw a team of its journalists recognized in the International Reporting category for their series of investigations that exposed the organisation responsible for thousands of deaths, the Philippine National police.

Stephen J Adler, editor-in-chief of Reuters said: "In a year in which many Pulitzers were rightly devoted to US domestic matters, we're proud at Reuters to shine a light on global issues of profound concern and importance....

"The extraordinary photography of the mass exodus of the Rohingya people to Bangladesh demonstrates not only the human cost of conflict but also the essential role photojournalism can play in revealing it.

"I'm incredibly proud of the brave and resilient Reuters teams that chronicle the consequences of government policy and behaviour around the world".
