A man is being questioned by police in Newcastle following a brutal attack on a pregnant woman in front of her child.

Police say they are treating the incident as an aggravated burglary.

The pregnant woman was punched and hit over the head with a glass bottle during the attack.

It happened after a man forced his way into the woman's house at Burren Meadow in Newcastle shortly after 5.30am on Sunday.

Police say the attack happened in full view of the woman's young daughter who was left distressed by the incident.

The woman, who sustained cuts and bruises and was left distressed and in a state of shock by her ordeal and required hospital treatment.

A 35-year-old man was arrested a short time later on Westland Avenue in the town and is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Bell appealed for anyone who "noticed any suspicious activity in the Burren Meadow or Westland Avenue area of Newcastle or anyone who has information that would assist with police enquiries to contact Detectives at Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 407 08/04/2018".
