THE last surviving child of an executed leader of the 1916 Rising has died at the age of 104.

Fr Joseph Mallin was a Jesuit priest based in Hong Kong and received the Freedom of the City of Dublin two years ago.

His father was Commandant Michael Mallin, who was in command of the Irish Citizen Army at St Stephen's Green during Easter week, and was executed in Kilmainham jail in 1916.

On Sunday, his niece, Una Ni Challanáin, told RTÉ news that her uncle had died in the Chinese city.

The second youngest of five children, Fr Mallin said that he had no memories of his father since he was only two-and-a half years old when he died.

His father summoned his mother Agnes and him to his cell before he was executed on May 8, 1916 and gave her a note.

"Joseph, my little man, be a priest if you can," he is reported to have written.

Fr Mallin left Ireland for missionary work in Hong Kong in 1948.

Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD last night expressed her condolences to the Mallin family and praised his vigour and determination to keep his father's legacy alive.

"Fr Joseph had shown remarkable energy and dedication during the latter years of his life to ensure that his father's memory, and his heroic contribution to cause Irish of freedom, were rightfully vindicated in the face of politically motivated British court martial records," she said.

Dublin Lord Mayor Mícheál MacDonncha described him as an "inspiration".

"Fr Joseph cherished the memory of his father and his legacy of commitment to the cause of Irish freedom. sincere patriotism was an inspiration and it was a great source of pride that he held the Freedom of the City of Dublin."
